The Alpha Capricornid and Southern Delta Aquariids showers promise to put on a dazzling display, with the former known for its particularly bright fireballs. AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny explains that Comet 169P/NEAT, the parent body of the Alpha Capricornid shower, sheds relatively large dust particles and fragments, resulting in spectacular views. The moderate entry speed of meteors into Earth's atmosphere also contributes to deeper atmospheric penetration, creating longer-lasting and brighter fireballs. The best time to witness this cosmic show is the night of July 30 into the early morning hours of July 31, coinciding with the peak of the Alpha Capricornid shower. However, the full moon on July 29 may interfere with viewing conditions, as bright moonlight can wash out fainter meteors, but the brightest ones should still be visible. To maximize your viewing experience, find a dark location away from city lights, allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and look 30 to 60 degrees away from the radiant point in Capricornus, which is low in the southern sky. Spotting meteors doesn't require special equipment, according to NASA, making this an accessible event for all stargazers. As for future celestial events, Kansas stargazers can look forward to six more full moons in 2026, including the Buck moon on July 29, the Sturgeon moon and partial lunar eclipse on August 28, the Corn moon on September 26, the Hunter's moon on October 26, the Beaver moon (supermoon) on November 24, and the Cold moon (supermoon) on December 23. Additionally, the Kansas Astronomical Observers will host a monthly meeting on July 18 outside Lake Afton Public Observatory, providing an opportunity to connect with fellow astronomy enthusiasts.
